FAQs

Are Live Adventure trips for me?

You need an open mind, an adventurous spirit and moderate fitness (for intermediate adventure trips, you don’t need to run but you need to be able to comfortably walk for a couple of hours). We aim to be an inclusive and friendly adventure group, so if you prefer flying solo, then this is probably not for you.

What do adventure trips include?
  • Live Adventure will find and reccie the best adventure and hiking locations in Sydney
  • Logistics, timing, planning all organised – you just turn up to the meet point
  • Snacks
  • Friendly bunch of people (small groups, generally no more than 10)
  • Friendly, supportive guide qualified in 1st aid and emergency procedures (with 1st aid kit)
  • Get fit while having a fun adventure in a beautiful, natural location
  • Please note, when we rent equipment, a surcharge will cover hire fees (exact costs passed on)
Do I have to be super fit?

Nope, you definitely don’t need to be crazy athlete super fit!  But you do need a base level of fitness.  We will run adventure groups of different abilities soon, but for now we run intermediate groups.  Most adventure trips will be 3-4 hours of exercise.  Not at race pace, and you don’t need to be able to run, but we’ll hike at a decent pace.  It’s hard to define a ‘decent’ pace because it varies so much on the terrain, but around 5kms/hr on a flat fire trail.

We’ll go off road on tracks, rocks, boulders etc and sometimes we’ll do different outdoor activities like mountain biking, kayaking, or liloing (this will be detailed in the event description). So, you need to be reasonably fit but you don’t need outdoor or adventure experience.  To get an idea, you should to be able to walk in the city for a couple of hours quite comfortably.  Most importantly though, you need to come with an open mind and be willing to give fun things a try. You may need to go out of your comfort zone, but it will be well worth it!  Get in touch if you’re not sure. Do note that you need register before your first trip (or if your health changes) and if you have a condition that may be made worse by exercise, you will need a doctors clearance.

What about my health condition?

Before your first adventure trip, you need to fill out a registration. If you have a condition which may be made worse by physical activity/exercise, you will need medical clearance from your gp or appropriate allied health professional.

We need to make sure you’ve been checked out so that we don’t put you at risk.  It also gives your doctor a chance to tell us about particular outdoor activities or situations to be especially careful of. Unfortunately in this day and age, it’s also a legal issue. So thanks a lot for your understanding! If you have any questions, please get in touch and we can discuss options.

You said I need an 'adventurous spirit', what is that anyway?

A positive attitude, being ready to give things a go, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.  Nature and outdoor adventures are unpredictable but the more you embrace it, the better time you’ll have. Live Adventure’s values are to be inclusive, welcoming, friendly and fun.  But if you haven’t done this sort of thing before, some adventures (or parts of them) may seem daunting at first.  We’ll never ask you to do anything dangerous and we’ll detail the activities in the event description.  Just come with an open mind.  If you’re the type of person that really freaks out or gets paralysed by phobias, please get in touch first, these trips may not be right for you.

What is a typical Live Adventure trip?

We hope there is no ‘typical’ Live Adventure trip – that’s why they’re outdoor ‘adventures’!  We visit the best adventure spots in Sydney (going new places all the time), have a different mix of people and include different outdoor activities.  But to give you an idea, most adventure trips are 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon visiting one of Sydney’s many nature playgrounds.  Most of the time, we will do one main activity, commonly hiking, but we try to make it more fun by adding in something extra. It might be swimming in a waterhole, coasteering (going off track along the coastline), a navigation activity, a campfire, kayaking, canoeing or other fun things to do.

Does the whole adventure group stay together?

Live Adventure groups are run almost like a team event.  Most of the time the group all stays together because at the end of the day, it’s about being in nature with a bunch of friendly people, improving our fitness and having a fun time.  Sometimes there’ll be hills or stairs when we’ll go at our own pace and regroup at the top.  If you feel good, push as hard as you like and have a great workout (I hope you do!).  But we vary in levels of fitness and outdoor experience, and we all have bad days sometimes.  So in our adventure groups, we encourage and support each other if the going is a bit tough.

If you’re out there purely for you own maximum training effect and want to race the whole way, then these intermediate trips are not for you.  They are about having a good workout and a challenge, but getting the whole group to the finish and having fun.  Stay tuned for advanced trips when you can really push yourself, and you’re very welcome to carry extra weight in your pack too.

Can I bring my child(ren)?

It’s awesome that kids want to get out and explore nature but unfortunately there’s legal and insurance requirements for a business to take under 18s. At this stage Live Adventure doesn’t cater for under 18s but by all means get in touch and if this changes in the future I will let you know.

Do I need lots of gear?

You’ll be emailed a packing list prior to each adventure trip.  As a guide, you’ll need comfortable clothes including a jumper (fleece is ideal), a rain jacket and sturdy shoes (runners or cross trainers are fine, hiking boots not required).  Also a hat and sunnies.

What happens if it's raining?

It adds to the adventure!  If we could choose, we probably wouldn’t pick wet weather but you’d be surprised what rain can add to outdoor adventures.  It can make rugged coastlines atmospheric, it can bond the group together, it can make the trip even more memorable in  contrast to being stuck indoors.  With the right attitude, there’s no reason for rain to dampen the day.

Exceptions are if the weather is so bad it would make the trip dangerous in which case we will either change to a different adventure trip or cancel (hardly ever!).  We will let you know ASAP if that happens.

Do you run longer adventure trips?

We will definitely organise some longer trips – full day, weekend trips and occasionally a bigger trip.  We’ll let you know when they are coming up so get in touch if you’re interested or sign up to our mailing list and we’ll let you know.

What if I don't like a Live Adventure trip?

That makes us sad!  But people are into different things and we don’t think anybody should pay for stuff they don’t like, including adventure trips!  That’s why we have a 100% money back guarantee (minus rental surcharge if there is one).  If you don’t like the trip and you have a bad time, we’ll refund your money.  That way you can see what it’s all about and find out if the trips are for you.  If you like it, fantastic.  If not, no worries, you get your money back.

What is your cancellation policy?

We hope you don’t have to cancel of course, but sometimes life happens and you don’t have much choice.  Please let us know as soon as possible. If you cancel, somebody misses out on having a good time because your spot was unavailable. We also have to pay overheads and organise instructors. If you cancel:

  • More than 30 days in advance, you get a full refund.
  • 7-30 days in advance, you get credit towards a future trip but no cash refund.
  • Less than 48 hours before the trip, or don’t show up for the trip, no credit or refund will be given.
What about the environment?

That question probably wasn’t on the tip of your tongue, but at Live Adventure, the environment is hugely important to us.  It’s where we run our adventures and it’s the reason we run our adventures.  We are acutely aware that it is a priviledge to be living on this incredible planet and it’s up to us to look after it.

We encourage adventurers to use more sustainable transport when possible so we’ll give you options for public transport, cycling and arrange a carpool to meeting points when we can.  It’s not always possible though so don’t worry, nobody will frown upon if you if you don’t!  We also leave no trace by carrying out all rubbish.

The business uses 100% Greenpower from Meridian Energy and donates 10% of our net profits to environmental charities, currently Bush Heritage Australia and EDO NSW (Environmental Defender’s Office of NSW).  We hope you’re on board with our environmental efforts 🙂
